Essential Equipment for Surfing

When it comes to surfing, there are some essential items you will need. The two most important ones are a surfboard and wetsuit. If you are a newcomer to surfing, you may want to borrow this equipment or rent them. The reason for this being that you may not like surfing; therefore, you do not want to shell out hundreds of dollars on equipment that you may not end up using in the long run.

As a beginner, you want to choose a surfboard that is fairly big. A longboard over 9’ is ideal to start off with, but this may be a hassle for smaller individuals to carry. An alternative is a 7’6” – 8’ funboard, which is a cross between a longboard and shortboard.  A beginning surfboard should be thick enough to float so you can easily paddle and wide enough so that it is stable in the water.

The second item you will need for surfing is a wetsuit, which will allow you to stay comfortable in the water for long periods of time. If you are lucky enough to surf in an area that has warm water, you may be able to get away with wearing boardshorts or a swimsuit. Before you buy a wetsuit, make sure to do extensive research since there are many different types of wetsuits. Shop around until you find one that fits your budget.

In addition to a surfboard and wetsuit, you will also need a surfboard leash and some surf wax. Once you have these essential items for surfing, you are set to hit the ocean and catch some waves!

  1. Surfing is an extremely challenging pursuit, yet the rewards that come with improvement are well worth the multiple wipe outs.
